　　Catti英语笔译综合能力测练习题中经察大家对于近义词以及形近词的理解与应用，有些词的意思相近，但却有一些细微的差别，而对于这些细微差别的理解就决定了选择题的正确与否；还有一类就是形式上看上去较为相似，但是意思却大相径庭，所以这类题目对一些同学来说较为棘手。征服这类题目不仅在于平时对于词汇的积累，更在于我们在备考时就能细心辨别这类词汇的差异并加以整理，从而不至于在考场中混淆。

　　近义词辨析

　　1. reduce &abate &curtail & diminish

　　①reduce : to make sth less or smaller in size, quantity, price, etc. 减少，缩小（尺寸、数量、价格等）

　　②abate : to become less strong; to make sth less strong （使）减弱，减退，减轻，减少

　　③curtail ：to limit sth or make it last for a shorter time 限制；缩短；减缩

　　④diminish ：diminish (sth) to become or to make sth become smaller, weaker, etc. 减少；（使）减弱，缩减；降低

　　粗一看这几个词的意思都有减少或者降低之意，但是这几个词各自有什么特殊的含义或者词之间有什么细微差别呢？

　　reduce表示降低程度，尺寸，数量，数目等。

　　例：Giving up smoking reduces the risk of heart disease.

　　戒烟会减少得心脏病得风险。

　　更进一步地来讲，它还可以表示使陷入（更坏的）境地；使堕落。

　　例：They were reduced to begging in the streets.

　　他们沦落到沿街乞讨。

　　abate 通常表示降低或者减弱某些分布广的或极其强烈的东西。

　　例：The storm showed no sign of abating.

　　暴风雨没有减弱的迹象。

　　Steps are to be taken to abate pollution.

　　应该采取措施减少污染。

　　另外，在法律英语中，abate表示完全移除，消除。

　　例：To abate a nuisance.

　　消除妨害

　　curtail表示突然的，短时间内的减少；也表示限制某事物

　　例：Spending on books has been severely curtailed.

　　购书开支已被大大削减。

　　The lecture was curtailed by the alarm going off.

　　那次讲座被突然鸣响的火警中断了。

　　Diminish表示逐渐地减少，减轻，但是没有完全消失

　　例：My eyesight has diminished with age.

　　我的视力随着年龄的增长逐渐减弱。

　　形近词辨析

　　1. evoke &provoke &revoke &invoke

　　evoke ：( formal) to bring a feeling, a memory or an image into your mind 引起，唤起（感情、记忆或形象）

　　例：The music evoked memories of her youth.

　　这乐曲勾起了她对青年时代的回忆。

　　His case is unlikely to evoke public sympathy.

　　他的情况不大可能引起公众的同情。

　　名词：evocation

　　例：A brilliant evocation of childhood in the 1940s

　　唤起对 20 世纪 40 年代童年生活的美好回忆

　　Provoke ：

　　① to cause a particular reaction or have a particular effect 激起；引起；引发

　　例：The announcement provoked a storm of protest.

　　这个声明激起了抗议的风潮。

　　The article was intended to provoke discussion.

　　这篇文章旨在引发讨论。

　　Dairy products may provoke allergic reactions in some people.

　　乳制品可能会引起某些人的过敏反应。

　　②to say or do sth that you know will annoy sb so that they react in an angry way 挑衅；激怒；刺激

　　例：The lawyer claimed his client was provoked into acts of violence by the defendant.

　　律师声称，他的当事人是受到被告的挑衅才采取暴力行动的。

　　Be careful what you say—he's easily provoked.

　　说话要小心，他这个人一惹就火儿。

　　近义词：goad ：to keep irritating or annoying sb/sth until they react （不断地）招惹，激怒，刺激

　　例：Goaded beyond endurance, she turned on him and hit out.

　　她被气得忍无可忍，于是转身向他猛击

　　He finally goaded her into answering his question. （词组：goad sb/sth into sth/into doing sth）

　　他终于激得她回答了他的问题。

　　Revoke

　　( formal) to officially cancel sth so that it is no longer valid 取消；废除；使无效

　　例：The government revoked her husband's license to operate migrant labor crews.

　　政府撤销了她丈夫经营流动劳工团队的许可证。

　　Invoke / ?n?v??k /：

　　①to mention or use a law, rule, etc. as a reason for doing sth 援引，援用（法律、规则等作为行动理由）

　　例：It is unlikely that libel laws will be invoked.

　　不大可能诉诸诽谤法。

　　②to mention a person, a theory, an example, etc. to support your opinions or ideas, or as a reason for sth 提及，援引（某人、某理论、实例等作为支持）

　　例：She invoked several eminent scholars to back up her argument.

　　她援引了几位赫赫有名的学者来支持她的论点。

　　③to mention sb's name to make people feel a particular thing or act in a particular way 提出（某人的名字，以激发某种感觉或行动）

　　例：His name was invoked as a symbol of the revolution.

　　他的名字被提出作为那次革命的象征。
